The home affairs committee of the senate sent a three-person team down to Oaxaca to assess the chaotic situation there last week. The team left on 11 October and returned on 13 October, reporting back to the committee on 16 October. The full committee is due to vote on 17 October on whether there is now a power vacuum in the state. If it decides that there is, the way will be open for the government to appoint a new governor for the state, replacing the elected governor, Ulises Ruiz from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).
